Rooted in Nature: The Strength and Beauty of Piassava Fiber

Native to the Atlantic Forest and coastal regions of Brazil, piassava fiber is harvested from a type of palm known for its resilience and raw elegance. Traditionally used for brooms and brushes, this natural material has found new expression in contemporary craft and design. Its coarse texture, earthy color, and remarkable durability make it ideal for handwoven pieces that celebrate both form and function. At Casa Itti, we work with artisans who transform this humble fiber into baskets, clutches, and decorative objects—each one telling a story of tradition, sustainability, and deep respect for nature.

Sauípe Artisans

Handicrafts made by women in Sauípe, Bahia, are powerful expressions of empowerment and cultural pride. Using skills passed down through generations, these women transform local natural materials into beautiful handmade products — gaining financial independence while honoring their heritage.

Straws from coconut palms, ouricuri, and piassava are among the main materials they work with, skillfully woven into bags, mats, hats, baskets, and decorative items. Each piece tells a story, preserving tradition through craftsmanship.

This work reflects a deep connection between creativity, sustainability, and respect for nature — showing how handmade art can support both communities and the planet while keeping Brazilian culture alive.
